Sketches

Here you can see ideas form as sketches that sometimes become preparatory works for paintings.  For me, a sketchbook can be a repository of ideas to be used later but sometimes it's a way to work through an idea in progress.  Also, drawing is a useful activity in itself as it sharpens the skills of looking, seeing and interpreting.
