Stillness & Storm

‘Stillness & Storm’ started with our experience of painting and drawing in high winds and sleet to blistering heat throughout the year. But over time I recognised a deeper resonance in my practice and considered more closely what this visceral experience of painting meant.
I felt an embodied and present state while painting and the work reflected this state. I also noticed something new emerge that had a life of its own in the work. Landscape, woodland and the changing weather became an allegory for finding peace and calm amidst turmoil and what becomes true for me when this happens.

Pulling together my research and art practice for this exhibition with Steve Roberts has encouraged me to explore visual forms inspired by how the unconscious mind prompts us from within but needs us to find a way in our busy, conscious minds, to meet it half way. When we find stillness within the storm we come closer to understanding the many forms this gentle prodding takes to guide and illuminate what we should pay attention to in our daily lives. In my work, the forms this will take will be through paintings, drawings, sculptures, printmaking and artist’s books. This is an ongoing process that shifts and turns like wind moving through the trees of a small woodland.
This successful exhibition ran for two weeks from 15th to 28th October at:
